The teaching of the three R's: reading, writing and arithmetic

In relation to the teaching of reading, a bibliographical journal about the history of school literacy (16th to the 20th century) was conducted in 1998-1999 in order to take a close look at the areas in which our knowledge is well-documented or not. It has led to a first survey into the reading booklets stored at the INRP (before the 20th century) and to the writing of a provisional synthetized article of a historical nature to be published in English (Terezinha Nunes and Peter Bryant ed.Handbook of Children's Literacy Kluwer Academic Publisher)
Sifting through the journals - Les Cahiers Pédagogiques- from 1947 to 1970 has made it possible to go back over the transformations of literary reading in the secondary education sector.
Concerning the teaching of writing, the perusal of the Manuel général de l'instruction primaire (General Handbook of Primary Education) has enabled us to trace the origin of French compositions for the 19th century primary schoolers. The study is going to be continued for the period extending initially from 1870 to 1923 and then from 1923 to 1970.
