An investigation of old scientific instruments

Bruno Belhoste
Henri Chamoux

Material equipment in scientific activities is paramount to the history of the teaching of physics. The role of physics laboratories has been a decisive one in defining this experimental teaching. The choice and use of scientific material have not failed to influence teaching methods and its evolution is in keeping with that of educational conceptions in use.

Numerous statutory texts show how preoccupied all parties involved in scientific teaching were about this equipment. This is why from 1992 onwards the Department of the history of education has shown great concern about the inventory and preservation of old scientific instruments stored in secondary schools.
A study including photographs, museum inventories and technical descriptions has been undertaken by Henri Chamoux.

This work will give rise to the setting up of a database and to the publication of a book about collections of physical instruments in lycées and secondary schools.
