Conference Themes

Secondary education, the history of which is generally far from being studied as much as primary and higher education, is yet a very rich subject. In the past, secondary education used to give a general education and a common culture to the future social elite. In more democratic societies, where education for all has become an economic asset as well as a right, it had and it still has to adapt to mass education, by diversifying or by offering a new culture, and new methods to pass it on. The historical interest as well as the present stakes of this question have led ISCHE 24's organizing committee to propose the theme of secondary education, in the broadest sense of the word — any post-elementary education aimed at teenagers — without chronological or geographical limits. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the creation of lycées, ISCHE 24 will take place in France where secondary education — organized and controlled by the state — has long represented the core of the educational system. It may be the starting point of comparative reflections on the following themes :

Three keynote addresses will be provided in plenary sessions, in French or in English, with simultaneous translation from one language into the other. The keynote speakers are :

All the hotels showed on the map are located at a reasonable walking distance from the conference place which is in the square made by the following streets: boulevard Saint Michel, boulevard Saint Germain, rue Monge and boulevard de Port Royal (near hotels number 16, 33 and 34). You just need a few minutes to reach the conference place from the hotels near the boulevard St Germain.
