The “Literature in education” team has two actions; both concern the French language.
The spelling modification initiative recalls the successful research carried out ten years ago into the level of pupils’ spelling. The “Didactique et apprentissage du français (daf)” database groups together all research published in this field.

The purpose of “Literature in education” is to open debate on methods for teaching literature from pre-school to university. The study looks, in a concrete and pragmatic way, at effective methods that have been used on the same text (Andersen’s Little Mermaid) and the comparisons made between them by those concerned. It involves staying on top of reading material and methods for teaching literature that seem to prevail at each level of our national education system, but that may be affected by personal choice, commitment and ideas.
It also involves assessing the benefit that pupils get from these different methods of teaching from an intellectual, cultural and personal outlook.

In a second phase, and on the same basis, this research will be compared to methods for teaching literature in other countries (Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, etc.).

The work focuses on:

  • primary school teaching choices,
  • French and literature from primary school to high school

Spelling modification in pupils aged 10 to 16 (compulsory schooling)

Manager: Danièle Manesse
Spelling is the typical starting point for writing language at school and thus features different phases: conflict between written and spoken language, familiarisation of writing rules, adaptation to social linguistic rules, demonstration of metalinguistic processes developed within the framework of school learning.
In 2004, this research project intends to carry out a comparative study on the level of spelling of children and adolescents aged 10 to 16. This project is identical to the one carried out almost twenty years ago by André Chervel and Danièle Manesse on two corpora, one dating from 1877 and the other from 1986.
At the time, results of this research were the subject of two publications (Calmann-Levy and INRP) that helped to shed light on the debate, which is still very active, on the evolution of pupils’ levels in spelling.

Manager: Annie Le Fustec
DAF intends to collect the results of research in the teaching and acquisition of the French language as a mother-tongue carried out since 1970 in France, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg and Switzerland. It is building an analytical bibliography that can be consulted on the Internet (http://www.inrp.fr/daf). Each document collected – article, contribution, monograph, thesis, grey literature – is the subject of a bibliographical note, including information on the content of the work and its methodology. It is aimed at researchers, trainers and teachers.
It is a means of summing up issues that concern different fields of teaching: oral expression and communication, reading, writing, spelling, mother-tongue analysis and teaching. It contributes to the evolution of research projects, in terms of content and method, and provides means for thought on the types of research project to carry out or undertake. It encourages research results to be published, and interaction between researchers and people in the field.
