To know and to act

Act of educating, training actions, classroom activity, active methods : those terms, commonly used by professionals in education and training belong to the same paradigm : TO ACT. This paradigm, unlike a generally accepted idea, is not in the least at variance with the paradigm TO KNOW. But « knowledge » takes time and demands a sustained, long-lasting reflection. Meanwhile, however, children, teenagers, adults are involved in face to face interaction with their teachers, educators or trainers : they cannot indefinitely wait for the moment to come when they will be able to learn and to construct their own way of thinking and behaving, their autonomy. Nevertheless, in the field of education and training, actions, even when scheduled over a short time, should never deprive us of the intellectual or conceptual references that are likely to give meaning to the act of educating, to the process of training. Knowledge enables us to analyse the situations in or upon which we have to take action. This is how research in education and training builds its meaning and necessity : besides the fact that they increase our knowledge, which in itself leads to opening the field of the educational sciences, the scientific achievements they produce may act as markers and references for the reflection that precedes and underlies the educative and training actions.

To stress in such a manner the necessity of research in order to get knowledge upon the terms and requirements of the act of educating or training and its inner workings is in no way at variance with the grounds of the previous biennial : « (These) uncertainties reach their highest point in the actions from educational, didactical, political and administrative areas ». In fact, every piece of knowledge is won over doubts and uncertainties.

The act of knowing is a matter of ethics as much as of science and this also applies to the act of educating. The year 2002 Biennial should allow researchers and professionals to think about the meaning of ACTION in the field of education and training.

You are invited to submit :

A PAPER OF RESEARCH
The paper of research should analyse facts and educational phenomena, or describe work of pedagogic or didactic nature which contribute directly to transformations of practical situations and training systems.

A PAPER OF INNOVATION
T
he paper of innovation should present  precise details of transformations in the field of education and training.
Papers of innovation will be submitted to two juries and compete for the “Prize of innovation”.

A PRESENTATION OF CREATION
A creation should present a technical or practical work in the form of videotape, cd-rom, hand book, case-study, training game (as long as the game is not distributed or marketed), website.

PPREPARATION OF THE WORKSHOPS
During the last five biennials, we have tried several solutions to allow the authors to present their works in the best possible conditions. The number of participants at each presentation of papers often raises a real problem. Therefore, grouping together of three or four papers permits an acceptable solution.
During the fifth Biennial, the abstracts of the papers that were retained by the selection committed were put together according to their topics and published on the INRP website, thus offering each group actual possibilities of debate between the authors with moderation by a specialist. After three months, the moderators summarised the different subjects expressed on the Internet by the authors and selected topics and issues in order to establish 15 workshops on “Acute issues in research and innovation” organised during three half days of the Biennial.
This will also be the scheme for the 6th Biennial. You are therefore kindly requested to mention your e-mail address on the registration form.

As in 1999, special exhibition rooms will be provided for you to present your work (poster or creation selected by the selection committee) and to debate with the public.

  FIELDS OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE

As with the previous meetings, the organisation committee of APRIEF and INRP sincerely hopes that the contributions will develop a wide range of topics, fields and methods.

The biennials are therefore a forum to encourage the exchange of knowledge, creation, experience and proposals. However, APRIEF, INRP and their partners would like the papers and contributions to be based on the following three topics :

Professional training in all aspects (the effects of globalisation, role of international fellowship, Europe as an educational area, comparative education, qualification processes…)

Training in social work in Europe (postgraduate studies? Educational practices vs violence)

Teacher training (as change forces)
